During my senior year at Michigan State my boss at The State News decided to quit. She trained me for a few months and then left the country. It was quite an abrupt change and I struggled, ever so slightly, to try to keep everything on track. I was doing 16 page print layouts by my self and trying to get all design requests done for the entire newsroom with a staff of two, including myself. It was a lot of sleepless nights. But the next semester came around and the general manager hired more designers and I became the design manager overnight while still taking classes. It was definitely a learning experience, but I honestly love the position I landed in. It was a lot of work, but I ended up leading six other people and teaching them everything I know. My position changed from creating art to making spreadsheets, teaching, advising, and of course picking up any left over work. Then I graduated college at MSU with a bachelors in Anthropology with minors in graphic design and leadership of organizations. I applied to work at The State News as their full time Creative Advisor and was lucky enough to get the job!
