I used Photoshop and InDesign to design most yearbook spreads during my high school years. I have taken courses on how to use Adobe Illustrator and I have also used Piktochart to create infographics for the newspaper, The Emery, and The Upstart. I have been a graphic designer for six years where I have also learned photography and reporting skills. The four years of my involvement in my high school's yearbook, photography, and art classes gave me all I needed to apply for the 2019 All-State Student Journalist Staff from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association which I received on April 23rd, 2019 at the MIPA spring awards at Michigan State University's school of Journalism. My college work is shown under the college tab, this page is dedicated to the theme development of my high school's yearbook while I was the junior editor-in-chief and later senior editor-in-chief.
Sophomore year, this theme was the most liked out of all the concept options. The theme was made to center on the student body as a whole. We included lines and different font sizes which mirrors the title of the book. The picture was of the student section during a football game. This year, I tried to earn my position as an editor and I took on many responsibilities. I was able to earn the title of junior editor in chief even though it was only my sophomore year. This was the homebuilding page I did in my sophomore year. It had more coverage than freshman year, and had more of the theme incorporated on the pages.

Junior year, the theme Changing Direction was somewhat difficult to create, it centered on academics and a change in our schedules as the new year rolled around. The cover was white and there was no picture on it, which made it somewhat disliked by the student body. Our coverage inside the book, however, was twice the amount we had the year before, and ten times the coverage we had freshman year. It was easy to incorporate the theme by using arrows and different font sizes as shown on the cover. This year, I became editor in chief and was able to lead a wonderful team of editors that created an award-winning publication. I helped with theme development. A sports spread mock-up with the junior year theme. We changed the layouts multiple times so that it could have more thematic elements.

Senior year, the theme Emerge was created to center on individuals in the school. It is meant to show how everyone is different but we are all part of the same community. This theme was harder to carry throughout the book. We incorporated bold colors and bars on as many pages as we could and kept to a style guide. We had a better system this year than we ever had. We brought back the black cover since it was so popular sophomore year and the coverage has greatly expanded. We incorporated personality profiles within most feature pages and in the senior sections. During my second year as editor in chief, I was one of the main developers of the theme and coverage ideas. I made substantial changes to the theme so that it wasn't cliché or too difficult to incorporate throughout the book. I designed this divider spread and used photoshop to make one person in the photo stand out. It incorporated black and white into the page which is a theme element we used on the cover. There were three dividers in this year's book. This is a spread I designed-- the Varsity Volleyball page. It covers more content than we have ever covered on any sports page in the past and it carries theme elements throughout the layout. |
